Hi,

The current rules say:

"Ways to Lose your Game. As a summary of the expectations in this handbook, and the statutes, here are many of the ways to lose your game:
[...]
No-escape is on, and either player disconnects. = BOTH players lose the game."

Now, with the FICS noescape change, if only one player had noescape on, only that one should lose, right?

How will you know who had no9escape=1 during the game?

I don't know if it is possible, but after tl play command, the TL Bot should check variable settings (kibitz, silence, noescape, private, notakeback) of both players and not to start the game if any of them is improper.

I think TL Bot is already doing that. The problem is that not 100% of games are started with TL Bot. I see no reason to penalize a player who has the correct value of noescape, when a disconnection happens.

Re: how to check. If there are no better ways, I would rely on players' honesty. Still seems better to me than automatically penalize both players.

There have actually been two significant changes since the quoted rule was enacted; the first is that the bot now checks for noescape and private settings and prevents games from being started under noescape conditions. The second is the FICS noescape change.

So far we haven't had a situation like the one Pankracy refers to, though he is right to note the possibility. If a game were played in this fashion, and ended by disconnection, I think at a minimum it would require an admin ruling. I would argue that a game played without the bot, and not satisfactorily concluded need not be considered an official TL game at all, but this may not be everyone's view.

As the off-season is nearly upon us, this point can and should be reviewed before the next tourney starts.

It's true that the TeamLeague rule probably needs to be updated due to the server change.

As a practical matter, players can ensure that noescape is not an issue by starting all games with the bot, because I made the bot check that both players have noescape=0. You will receive a tell at the start of the game from TeamLeague(TD), "This game was noted as a Teamleague game", if and only if the game was started through the bot.
